B J Jarrad Pty Ltd were one of the first contractors on site in the establishment of a mineral sands mining operation located in the Eucla Basin approximately 200 kilometres north west of Ceduna, within the Yellabinna and Nullarbor Regional Reserves.
The remoteness and the environmental sensitivity of the area presented major challenges to the timely delivery of the project.

MYCON

Construction Period
April 2008 - November 2008

B J Jarrad Pty Ltd were engaged to set out, excavate, install, test and commission all in-ground services including:

One of the challenges of this project was the client's requirement to maintain the integrity of the pavement, which was rated at a point load of 40 tonne, above the services. Accurate trench excavation was a necessity where heavy duty pavement was required - for 80% of the project works. Due to unstable soil conditions at the site, concrete was used as the backfill material, so accuracy of laying was imperative.

Fire Tanks and a Fire Pump Room were designed, installed and commissioned to provide independent fire fighting facilities on site.

The design of the Gross Pollutant Traps and "off beach" Duraboom were innovative providing a challenge for the construction team, but these were constructed successfully.

All survey information was captured for the compilation of As Constructed drawings.

A very successful outcome was achieved by B J Jarrad Pty Ltd on one of the most high profile construction projects for South Australia in over twenty years.

Oxiana Prominent Hill Operations Pty Ltd
(now Oz Minerals)

Construction Period
August 2006 - September 2008

Between August 2006 and December 2008, B J Jarrad Pty Ltd completed several projects at Prominent Hill for the Prominent Hill Copper/Gold Mine. The site is approximately 110 kilometres south east of Coober Pedy.

Permanent

Village / Camp Services

B J Jarrad Pty Ltd constructed a 1200 person camp including installation of accommodation units, potable and non-potable water, and sewer infrastructure.

In addition to the initial contract scope of works, major variations were awarded which included earthworks, installation works on mess areas and ice rooms, construction of the airstrip lounge, concrete pathways and verandahs, electrical works, fire tanks and fire pumps, and a pump station.

Raw Water Transfer Main

B J Jarrad Pty Ltd constructed 45 kilometres of 500DN Raw Water Transfer Main which was tested to a pressure of 2500kpa. One of the challenges of this project was the extreme heat, which on some days exceeded 50C. Fabrication of pipe work and construction of a bubbler were performed at the Raw Water Dam site. A surge tank was required to be installed prior to the laying of the pipework. A lack of availability of sand in the region necessitated padding machines to be utilised to screen the initial bedding and backfill to a minus 15mm sizing.

Due to the urgency of the commencement of the Raw Water Pipeline, our manufacturing team fabricated various large diameter air and scour tees as well as various isolation valve assemblies in our own Fabrication Workshop.

Transfer Pump Station

All pipework for the Transfer Pump Station was fabricated in the B J Jarrad Pty Ltd specialist Fabrication Workshop. Items manufactured included stainless steel and mild steel manifolds. Specialist subcontractors were engaged for the above ground tank installation and concrete works. Temporary water storage and a pump station were installed at the commencement of project to enable water to be utilised from Raw Water Dam area.

Tailings Dam Piping

4.8 kilometres of large diameter poly pipe with welded flanges was fabricated on site and installed along the perimeter of Tailings Dam. This pipework then had a fabricated 'slotted hockey stick' bolted to large diameter knife gate valve that enabled the waste product to flow to the base of the dam for evaporation.
Borefield Collector Systems

B J Jarrad Pty Ltd installed 90 kilometres of OPVC pipework in various diameters, connecting 16Bore Heads along with 3 Transfer Pump Stations. Despite the heat, the laying rate averaged 1500 metres per day, with two crews working on constant rotation. Padding machines were utilised to screen the spoil fromthe excavation to backfill the trenches.

Fire Main

This project was completed after the process equipment was erected. One of the challenges of this project was reducing the effects our works had on other subcontractors on site. Trench excavations were constantly wetted down by water trucks to reduce dust impacts, and at some stages, access points were temporarily closed to allow the works to progress.

This project was carried out through the summer period and the extreme temperatures had the ability to expand and contract the poly pipe considerably. Our experienced team employed several techniques to ensure that despite the heat, all pipework was accurately installed.

Two contracts were awarded for supply, lay and backfill. B J Jarrad Pty Ltd performed all excavations, and kept two working crews on constant rotation throughout the project.
